In 40 years of deep-sea dives, they've seen this octopus just four times. Researchers from MBARI have encountered a creature rarely seen in the wild: the seven-arm octopus, Haliphron atlanticus. Spotted at a depth of 2,300 feet (700 meters) in Monterey Bay, the male octopus was about the size of a football — and it was clutching a crimson helmet jelly in its arms.
