No, do NOT use CCleaner. Ever since it was bought by Piriform, it now has ad/bloatware, and sometimes malware as their update servers get hacked apparently. CCleaner is great if you know how to use it, what options to not touch, which ones to disable. I use it for quickly deleting temporary files, it's convenient to be able to delete browsing history from several apps/web browsers in one click. I shut off all analytics, system health monitor, automatic updates, automatic launching of program etc.
CCleaner now almost daily would randomly pops up a CMD prompt initializing something but I don't know what because it close so fast afterword. and no, CCleaner is not allowed on startup and not running in the background - its only on when I want to use it.
CCleaner is still the king of free PC cleaning tools IMHO. Just be careful with the installer and decline the additional software offers. For uninstalling, IObit Uninstaller is solid too.
I'm a heavy CCleaner user for both it's registry and disk cleanup functions * (somehow it works better than windows own cleanup utilities) For me.. because of the registry pruning; I do notice space savings and performance increases * (we're talking a few benchmark points; microseconds) in boot time. Especially after running a registry defrag.
I was annoyed to find out today that Avast bought out CCleaner in 2017. I didn't know this and don't particularly want CCleaner on my PC anymore, but I do want the last good version of CCleaner available if anyone could send my a file link. Cheers.
CCleaner is still fine, but bloated. The main thing is to be careful of other programs it's tries to install along with itself. Lately I've seen the CCleaner browser of all things. I guess it's just a rebranded version of the Avast Secure Browser, which is also not worth using.
